Free public forum to explore different perspectives on the ocean

What do a marine scientist, a historian and an artist all have in common?

Tasmanians are this week (Wednesday 6th) invited to find out the answer at a free public forum, Cross-disciplinary collaboration and the ocean, as part of the current Backscatter exhibition at IMAS.

The forum will discuss how researchers from different fields are working together to expand our understanding of the ocean.  IMAS marine spatial analyst Dr Vanessa Lucieer and University of Tasmania visual artist Dr Annalise Rees will join ANU historian Dr Joy McCann to explore how cross-disciplinary collaboration can highlight the significance of the marine environment as a political, economic and cultural asset.

Dr Rees, who grew up on Kangaroo Island, said the panel discussion would have particular relevance to Tasmanians due to the close affinity that islanders have with the ocean, whether as a resource or workplace, a playground, or a fragile environment to be protected.

“Growing up on an island, the sea has defined my identity and has always been part of my consciousness,” Dr Rees said.  “The ocean is what brought me to Tasmania and has been a significant influence on my drawing practice since arriving here.  

“Working with scientists and fishermen has allowed me to understand so much more about the marine environment than ever before.  It is this kind of collaboration that we will be discussing at the forum, and I encourage anyone who’s interested in the ocean and our different perspectives on it to come along.”
