This project supports the monitoring and ongoing management of current salmon farming operations in Tasmania. This is to ensure current monitoring practices are adequate, and to make recommendations for improvement where necessary.
This year our priorities include:
This project also provides research support for management of farming in new development areas, notably our Storm Bay FRDC project that is developing and implementing an environmental monitoring program that assesses the environmental performance of farming at both local and system wide scale
In this video, the project's Principal Investigator, Dr Jeff Ross, describes the important natural features of Macquarie Harbour, the environmental responses to salmon farming, and the role that science is playing in determining the level of farming that is ecologically sustainable in the harbour into the future.
This project also provides research support for management of farming in new development areas (this complements externally funded research: FRDC 2015-024 and FRDC 2016-067).
Reports related to research in this area, are available here, under Salmon.
