Xihan Zhang

Postdoc at Caltech USA

What did you like best about the program?

I think the best thing I like about the program is the wide range of topics related to marine sciences, which have provided opportunities for me to understand many other aspects of the ocean. This helps me view the ocean in a bit more integrated way (also understand and appreciate the research of other fields of marine sciences).

How has it helped you in your current career?

I’ve learned useful skills which I can apply to my own research through taking some of the units. For example, coding in python. Additionally, working with different people in the program taught me how to collaborate well.

What was your favourite unit and why?

My favourite unit is (obviously) physical oceanography. Max taught it in a very organized way, and he can always explain complex dynamics concisely. It made lots of sense to me, so I enjoyed taking that unit very much.

What is your current role?

I am now a postdoc at Caltech analyzing SWOT data to understand the signal of observed sea surface height.
